Zeiss Ikon was founded as a merger of famous German still camera makers, including Ernemann which was also renowned for its "Kino" amateur movie cameras and Ernemann cinema projectors. The others were the superb camera optics maker Goerz, the Zeiss-related camera group Ica, and camera maker Contessa-Nettel.

From 1945 to 1958 two Zeiss Ikon companies existed, one in East Germany and one in West Germany, both derived from the same Zeiss related German group. Zeiss Ikon (West) doesn't make cameras and optics anymore, and the successor of Zeiss Ikon (East) was Pentacon, a giant photo-optical group which was eliminated by the corrupt "Treuhand" office after German reunification in 1990.

From 1970 to 1974 Zeiss Ikon (West) also owned the company Voigtländer. Hence some of Zeiss' super8-products are labeled "Zeiss Ikon Voigtländer". You'll find these products here.
